Fact And Fiction About Health And Fitness

By James Steele

No matter if you are old hand or new at health and fitness education the overall amount of information can seem a bit staggering. Many beginners become overwhelmed not only with the volume of information but also by trying to know what's truth and what's a lie. You will see that most books are written from the writers own experience. There are of course a lot of different approaches to fitness, yours will depend heavily on what you plan to do. That is why sometimes you can find conflicting information, and it is not necessarily the case that one is not true. You'll need to pay particular attention to just about everything you read.

Have you ever heard that swimming is a great way to lose weight? So here we are, telling you this is not the truth. Although there are many benefits to swimming, losing pounds doesn't even make the list. The reason for this is because as you are swimming the water is doing the work to support your body weight (called buoyancy) which basically means you aren't getting the workout you think you are or that you might if you were running or jogging long distances.

The only real way to get results is with the "no pain, no gain" rule. Dangerously incorrect is what that statement really is. In addition, there is very real potential for inflicting serious bodily damage by living that particular motto. The pain of a good workout should not inhibit your other activities. If it hurts don't do it, it the best rule to follow in relation to workout pain and soreness that does not subside in a reasonable amount of time. You will only cause yourself more complications by continuing an exercise that is causing you pain.

The myth we hear most is "I don't have time to exercise. All a person needs is ten to twenty minutes on three days during the week. Then, a thirty minute workout can be fit in on the weekend, perhaps. That minimal amount is vastly better than nothing at all. Also, think about combining a quick exercise session while you are at work, or take the children if they are old enough. You can go for a brisk walk during your lunch hour or break. You can take ten minutes and jump a rope, and you can do that in your apartment or house. It's not impossible to find that 10 minutes if you try hard enough.

Research supports the fact that a good program combined with diet can help you prevent serious injury and disease conditions. The benefits of exercise on cardiovascular health are no secret. High blood pressure, diabetes and high cholesterol are only a few of the other conditions that can be positively impacted by exercise. Your commitment to a healthy diet and exercise can also help you slow the effects of aging on your body. If you're totally new to working out, it is especially important to sort out the truth about health and fitness from the falsehoods. Because you are still forming your fitness habits, this is extremely important. Forming bad habits now mean a difficult re-education later when you try to form the right habits. Whether you continue your fitness program and your future success depend on forming good habits.
