The Many Varieties Of Wooden Puzzle Game

By Eula Nichols

A large number of toys for children make all kinds of electronic noises and light up, but sometimes the tried and trusted favorites are best. Simple toys provide a brain workout without necessarily providing an overload of stimulation. Toys made of natural substances will not be full of toxic chemicals. A wooden puzzle game may be found that is suitable for a child of any age. A description of some of the most common types of toy follows.

An old-fashioned jigsaw puzzle, which requires a person to match pieces together to complete an intricate picture, could take hours and even days to finish. Puzzles for kids are not as demanding, and might comprise a slab of wood with differing shapes cut out. Finishing such a puzzle simply involves working out which cutout goes in which matching slot in the wood. Although simple, this is an ideal gift for toddlers, as it assists in building healthy motor control while also stimulating the mind.

In addition to two-dimensional puzzles, toy-makers have also created three-dimensional puzzles that are entertaining and attractive. A toy in the form of an animal or an abstract polyhedron, which consists of interlocking parts that have to be pieced together, will provide hours of teasing problem-solving. As these toys require more brain power, they are better gift choices for older children.

Plain wood is a wise material to choose for children's toys, not only because it withstands wear and tear well but also because it makes less of a negative impact on the environment. Many parents who are concerned about what the production of plastic does to the environment choose toys made of wood because of environmental qualms about plastics.

Older children are able to enjoy more advanced designs. A game consisting of a tower of carefully balanced blocks, where blocks have to be removed and placed on top without the tower falling, improves patience and strategic planning. A toy like this is great for social occasions with friends or family members.

Some wooden puzzles borrow the format of classic games that have long provided entertainment for young people. The famous toy, 'Jacob's ladder', is one classic. This consists of a chain of blocks that are connected together by pieces of ribbon in such a way that turning one block over appears to make the next block in line tumble down the chain to the bottom of the row. The puzzling aspect of this is that the movement of the block is an optical illusion, created through the way the blocks are connected.

An additional game that may be constructed using wood is The Tower of Hanoi. The person attempting to solve the puzzle is required to rearrange eight discs that are piled on a single wooden pole, arranged in sequence of sizes, with the largest disc at the bottom and the smallest at the top. These discs have to be placed in the same order on a pole on the right, and there is another pole between the first and the third. The difficult part is that discs may only be moved one at a time, and a disc can be moved only if it is placed on top of a larger (and not a smaller) disc.

The above toys are only some of the many types to choose between when you want a wooden puzzle game that will provide mental stimulation while developing important skills and capabilities. When you order a toy online, make sure that you choose one that is suitable for your child's age group.
