Product Excellence From Horseware Ireland

By Jayne Rutledge

Established in 1985 horseware Ireland has set the standard for the horseware industry leaving competitors with only the option to copy their work and ideas. Proprietors Tom and Carol MacGuiness have a company policy that demands innovation and constant review of products they create. This policy has lead to many improvements in the original rug created for horses.

The first rug, the Rambo, was a tremendous improvement over what was found on the market previously. The fabric was lighter in weight and water resistant to keep the animals dry and warm. The shape of this rug was detailed to fit a horse properly and not slide around on its body and contained front clasps for consumer ease. This and other products gave them the reputation of being the best and highest producer of turnout rugs in the industry.

The products they have created show that they are constantly working to improve on them. The rugs have morphed into wugs and the reasoning for the changes show a highly developed knowledge of the needs of consumers and their horses. Although both products are available they cater to separate uses and most times to different climates and terrains.

Some changes include covers for the head and tail and fly busters to keep the pests off the horses as well as keep them cool and comfortable. Their designs also have higher neck coverage and are fitted to different sized animals. They have also created a line of rugs and wugs for dogs living in areas located in colder climates.

All fillers and fabrics that are used are designed to recover depth and thickness should your horse decide to roll on the ground. This process is called thermo-bonding. The loft of the fabric is what maintains the warmth the rug generates not simply the thickness. They also use a process called rip stop to protect the product. This system works by inserting a stronger nylon thread into the fabric every half inch to prevent tears from enlarging past the stronger thread.

The company has developed a line of clothing for all members of a family. They have a very attractive line of coats and pants for men, women and children to use when working with horses or riding them. These clothing items are durable and fashionable at the same time. They work and play with the same attention to style and versatility as all other products created here.

Over the past twenty plus years this company has built a reputation of excellence and innovation in the horse community. They have been given highest honors for the wugs and turn out rugs for up to ten years consecutively. The diversity of lines they have created has worked to their benefit and to the benefit of customers and their animals.

In an effort to be earth friendly they use nothing but renewable energy sources. The factory in Ireland is operated entirely on wind generated energy. Horseware Ireland is a dedicated member of the ISPCA and donates thousands of rugs for abused animals at the facility and around the world. They are also aligned with an agency that furnishes critically disabled children with horse and carriage therapy.
