Looking Older is now a Matter of Choice

By Alistair Nole

It's more accepted nowadays that a cosmetic surgeon should be involved in consultation for treatments that address certain signs of aging, such as wrinkles or a loss of elasticity in the skin. Proper treatment can provide the right course of action to get the results you want in targeting excessive skin or a loss of collagen in certain parts of the face. In the past ten years, treatment options have grown dramatically and their popularity continues to explode. What is it that motivates people today to have treatments done?

One factor at the heart of many people's decision to seek treatments is their self esteem. Some are looking to improve confidence, decrease self-consciousness. For example, one may think they have a large or conspicuous nose. Whether true or not, if one believes this to be true, the perception can create the reality and cause discomfort and anxiety. For some who work very hard through diet, exercise, makeup, clothes, etc, to look their best, a problem or flaw that they can improve upon, or an area that they would like to make just a bit better can be quite important. This becomes even more important when it is linked to sexuality.

The end result of a change can actually increase a person's sense of improvement in quality of life or work. This can include things like wearing the bathing suits and clothes you want to wear. Or, going to the beach is enjoyable for you, and you want to feel good about your body. Perhaps you deal with the public a lot or have a very public job. These factors all contribute to the decision.

Closely connected with self esteem, vanity is one of the top motivators. It's only natural to want to regain a lost positive attribute. For example, my lips used to be full but now... , I always had a nice figure but now.... Having good positive reinforcement over the years and losing that attribute can be like losing one's self-identity.

It's completely normal to want to slow down, reverse or turn back those effects of aging that start to show up, or have been creeping up for some time. Furthermore, it's equally natural to want to improve or alter a feature that you have always disliked. Your views may change as you mature -- you might decide that, after years of reflection on a feature, that it is definitely something you would like improved.

Health reasons are definitely a motivator. The various unpleasant postpartum changes to the body can be depressing for any mom. A real, tangible benefit is correcting post-weight loss body changes. Relief of physical factors or symptoms could be needed too. For example, chronic recurrent headaches, neck strain, lower back pain, shoulder notching, numbing or tingling in the hands due to nerve stretch could all be relieved by a breast reduction -- these are all associated with excessively large, heavy, dense breasts (mammary hypertrophy). A breast reduction procedure completely remedies almost all of these problems.

Dramatic changes in life are another motivating factor. People may feel that their job, or some other significant life stress has aged them, or that they are wearing their divorce on their face. Whatever the reasons, there are clear, safe and affordable options available for anyone looking to make those changes or small corrections.
