When To Use Amigo Horse Rugs

By Marissa Velazquez

Established in 1985, Horseware Ireland Ltd. Is well known for its quality products. Company policy is "innovation, not imitation". Every product is periodically reviewed. High quality materials keep equines warm and dry. High quality design ensures comfort with a secure fit. Amigo horse rugs are designed to offer quality at an affordable price.

Blankets protect from cold, rain, dirt and mud. Some protect from insects or ultraviolet rays. A properly fitted blanket doesn't slip or leak. Turnout blankets must be waterproof. Blankets must be the right weight and fit to protect from the elements while allowing complete range of motion. Sheets are for protection from dust and dirt, but don't add warmth. Cooler sheets insulate against chills after exercise on cold winter days.

Stable blankets protect stabled equines from cold weather. Use indoors or as an extra layer under a turnout. Turnout blankets are designed to stand the wear and tear of outside time. Amigo turnout rugs are waterproof, breathable with a nylon lining, come in 3 weights and include the option of adding a hood.

An animal outside in snow or rain should be covered. The elderly, colts and fillies, are more susceptible needing covers earlier and later in the season. A recently clipped horse is more susceptible to cold. An animal recently moved from a warmer climate will need a rug. Show horses are blanketed to keep their coat clean and the growth light and even.

In moderate climates, horses will need at least 1 stable sheet and 1 turnout rug. In cold weather, add an inner liner for extra warmth, with an outer layer that protects from rain and snow. Two sets are recommended so 1 set can be washed while the horse is wearing the other set. Blankets shared between horses can spread contagious skin diseases. Best that each horse have his own sheets and blankets.

Measure from the center of the chest to the tail along the side of the horse. Order the same size as inches measured. For odd sizes or if your horse has a thick coat, round up. Check fit by slipping your hand between the blanket and withers. You should be able to reach the shoulder. Be sure the horse can lower his head to graze comfortably, and lift his tail to eliminate without obstructions. Too small blankets leave skin exposed, irritate the skin, and are uncomfortable to wear. Too large a blanket can rub blisters. The blanket can slip causing the animal to stumble. Insects and mud get underneath and become trapped.

At 40-55 degrees, most need a lightweight blanket without a liner. At 30-40 degrees, move up to a medium weight blanket. If recently clipped, or young or old, add a light liner. At 20-30 degrees most need a heavy rug with a medium liner. Below 20 degrees, use a heavy rug plus a stable blanket.
