The people who collect sports memorabilia take their hobby very seriously. There is no reason for them not to, after all many of them have spent thousands of dollars and a ton of time invested in the hobby. So many collectors have lost a ton of things worth who knows how much in simple basement flood. All because they neglected to think that something bad could happen to them and their collections.
Some people look for these for years and years. When they finally find the ones they are looking for it can be like a dream come true. This and all the other reasons above is why they do not take any chances with where they store their treasures. Because they are just that to these people, they are a treasure to them for sure.

That is why they will do whatever they can to protect the value of their stores. The condition dictates the value and it would be stupid to allow the condition to deteriorate.
